As much as we book lovers adore losing ourselves in stories, slipping away from the real world to wander faraway lands and journey alongside beloved characters, at one point or another the dreaded reading slump gets to us all. Even the most devoted readers aren’t immune, and one day you’ll find that you’re no longer compelled to turn over to the next page. Sometimes it passes on it’s own, but if you’re longing to fall in love with reading again and don’t want to wait, we have just the spell to help you banish the slump and rediscover the joy of getting lost between the pages once again. 🪄📖

💜 Reread an old favourite
Picking up a book you have read before and adored can sometimes be enough to cast away a reading slump. Turning those familiar pages and jumping back into a world you know and love can remind you exactly why you enjoy reading, igniting that spark once again.
📚 Try a chapter challenge
Sometimes a reading slump is caused simply by not knowing what kind of book you’re in the mood for. Sampling the first chapter, or even just a few pages, of a handful of different books lets you get a taste of a variety of stories without any pressure. You can then pick your next read based on the one that captures your curiosity and pulls you in most, limiting the risk of another DNF!
💆🏽♀️ Choose a palate cleanser book
Palate cleanser books are quick and engaging reads that give your mind a break from your usual genres and reading habits. Exploring something new can reset your reading appetite and refresh your focus.
📺 Try an adaptation
Switch your reading time to watching time! Whether it’s film or TV, immerse yourself in visual media and then pick up the book it was inspired by. You will already know the gist of the plot so you won’t have to focus too hard. Instead, you can have a fun but chill reading experience which might just be enough to snap you out of your slump!
📖 Explore shorter works
Try something short and sweet! Novellas, short story collections, poetry books or plays allow you to enjoy written media without the big time commitment. You can slowly rebuild your reading momentum one short book at a time.
💬 Ask for personal recommendations
If the suggestions you’re seeing online just aren’t piquing your interest, try turning to the people who know you best. Your nearest and dearest friends and family will be able to lead you to books perfectly suited to your tastes, helping you find the key to unlocking your love for reading again.
🎧 Try a different format
Stories don’t have to only live on the page. If reading a physical book feels difficult right now, how about letting a narrator guide you through a tale on audio? Or, keep an ebook close to hand so you can make the most of any small, sudden bursts of reading inspiration. A new format may be just what you need to make reading feel fun again!
🫶🏻 Be kind to yourself
Last, but certainly not least, be kind to yourself! Reading shouldn’t feel like a chore, and the more pressure you put on yourself to read, the less you may feel like doing it. It’s okay to take a break from books, whether that’s when life gets busy or just because! Reading slumps happen to us all and we promise that it’s is not the end of the world. Sometimes you just need to sit back, relax, and your love for books will find its way back to you in due course.

If you have any other tips or tricks for getting out of a reading slump, we’d love to know! Help out your fellow fairies and share them below! 🧚♀️
