Stunning photo by @thecrazyreader!

Hey fairies,

I hope you’re all ready for the last day of the March Adult Book-Only readalong of A Feather So Black Lyra Selene! We left off with Fia betraying Irian by trying to take the Sky-Sword from him, but she can’t as he’s the sword!

Today we are reading from chapter 39 to the end of the book!

Please be warned, the following section will include spoilers for A Feather So Black Lyra Selene from Chapter 39 to the end. Please only read on if you have finished this section!

-!SPOILERS!-

As the magic is weakening and needs to be renewed, Irian believes Fia’s the next Heir after him. When she saved Chandi in the lake, most of the magic controlling the forest was her; all Irian could do was control the wind!

Eala and Chandi lied to Fia about Irian trying to seduce them; he views them as sisters, and due to his out-of-control magic, he can’t touch anyone else but Fia; otherwise, he will hurt them! I can’t believe Chandi would lie to Fia, I thought she was trustworthy!

Fia still wants to save the humans and Fódla, but will she accept the role of being the next Heir for Irian? Will she be able to kill him when the time comes?

Rogan finds Fia to tell her that Eala has discovered a way to break her geas, all Rogan has to do is declare his love for Eala and marry her. I don’t think it could be that easy.

Fia decides to race home to help her make a decision. Once home she finds Cathair and confronts him about her childhood. He admits that he regrets everything he did, but the Queen forced his hand. I knew the Queen viewed Fia as a weapon more than a child.

Before Fia leaves for good, she finds the Queen and learns that she would rather sacrifice Eala than lose the sword’s magic. The Queen’s an awful mother!

Fia returns to Tír na nÓg, where she finds Irian and explains to him that her hatred of the Fair Folk runs very deep due to her upbringing. Irian admits that he loves her; he states, ‘If loving you is a cliff, then I have already fallen over it.’ Do we have a new favourite book boyfriend?

The next morning Irian wants Fia to go so that she doesn’t witness him turn into a massive black bird of prey as the curse affects him as well. She stands her ground and waits for him to return by exploring the land.

Irian’s pushing for Fia to become his heir as he wants his death to mean something; he doesn’t want the wild magic to be set free. The quickest way for Fia to accept the title of Heir is to marry Irian, even though she’ll be a widow afterwards. I really hope she finds a way to save him!

On the tithing day, Fia returns to Dún Darragh to say goodbye to Corra and Rogan! But Rogan can’t be found anywhere, so she rushes to see Irian again for the final time! Chandi finds Fia and tells her that the other Fair Folk have taken Irian!

Fia brings to life the statues of all the Fair Folk in the mortal using her magic and makes them follow her into Tír na nÓg; she’s ready to save Irian! Before she can save Irian, Rogan stops her, admits he loves her, and wants her to fight for him. Doesn’t he realise she doesn’t feel the same anymore?

Eala told Rogan that she needed his ‘willing’ heart to break the geas. She wants him dead, but her plans are ruined when he gives his heart to Fia! As retribution, Eala forces some mind-control flowers down his throat! I knew I never really trusted her!

Rogan listening to Eala, keeps Fia captive, whilst one of the swan maidens gives Eala her ‘willing’ heart that’s used to break the geas! But it doesn’t stop there, the other maidens are giving up their hearts, so Eala can control all of the gates to the mortal realm! She’s so cunning and evil!

Fia and Eala were brought up the same way. Eala believes herself to be a weapon and wants Fia to rule the mortal and Fair Folk realms with her! But Fia doesn’t want to rule, she uses the living statues as a distraction for her and Irian to get away!

Irian and Fia race to the Heartwood and quickly get married! Before Fia can kill Irian, to complete the tithing, she stabs herself in the heart and gives her ‘willing’ heart to the Heartwood! What did she do that for?

OMG!!! Fia’s the heir to the Sept of Antlers and the blue river stone Rogan carried around is the treasure! She sacrifices herself for balance to save everyone in both Fódla and Tír na nÓg! Why’s she giving her life for those who hate her!

Fia’s returned to Irian and they both admit their love for one another! I’m so happy they’re both alive! Now they have to figure out what to do about Eala!

This book was so much fun to read, I enjoyed every second, and I can’t wait for book two to read more about Fia and Irian!

I’m so happy with the ending. It was a great read. I can’t wait for book 2 and see more of Fia and Irian.
I think the next book would focus alot on the rebuilding of the magic and order in the flow world, and also deal with the human queens plots.

This has easily been one of my top 5 fae reads! Hoping Fairyloot will make the rest of the series 🤞🤞🤞

Thank you for leading the read along Emily! It was so much fun to read.
Even though I started loving Rogan, he has a few Tamlin kind of gestures that doomed him.
I’m so glad they are both alive, but I fear Eala will be a terrible villain now that she is so powerful. Will she also kill her mother? I’m intrigued!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I hope you join in with other readalongs! 🥰

I really liked this book and enjoyed reading along. I can’t wait to continue the story. So much happened, I thought the ending chapters were quite dramatic and original, I didn’t predict everything which felt nice. I’m here for Fia and Irian 🙂

What did you think of A Feather So Black? – I liked it more than I thought I would but I had no clue what was going on in the last section of the book.

Did you have a favourite moment from the book?
I liked Fias character growth and how she started to love herself and stood up to cathair and her “mother”.

Overall I’m rating it 3 stars and I probably won’t read the next book.

I liked it, but didn’t love it. I wanted more about Fia and Irian, and less of her and Rogan. I feel like the ending was rushed. When she sacrifices herself, there was no explanation about what happened after that: to Eala, the other swan maidens, or what Eala taking control of at least one gate means going forward. I feel like there was too much that wasn’t finished. Maybe there will be more extrapolation of that in the next book?

It was filled with magic, and curses, folklore and myths. I did enjoy reading it overall. Really enjoyed the read-a-long, and being able to hear about everyone’s thoughts while reading. Thank you!

What did you think of A Feather So Black? Did you have a favourite moment from the book?
Overall, I enjoyed this book. There were definitely parts that were confusing, especially towards the end. I had to re-read the part at the end because I thought Fia died. I am not surprised about Eala at all. There were various parts that were hinted that she is not good throughout the story. I am surprised that that mysterious stranger from who asked for a kiss for repayment from that one festival early on. We never learned who this person was. But, I’m sure they’ll come back at some point in time. The Folk seem to honor their bargains.

What do you think will happen in the next book?
In the next book, I think we’ll see Eala get more power. Hopefully she was not able to kill Chandi. But, I’m going to assume she killed the other Swan Maidens. She’ll probably just need Fia and Chandi to make it complete, or whatever. I do not think we’ll get a lot of the mortal world. I think we’ll learn more about Fia and she will move further along the road of loving herself and figuring out her heritage.

Overall, I am excited for the next book! I hope the next one is done by Fairyloot in a gorgeous way! This book was stunning!

    1. What did you think of A Feather So Black? Did you have a favourite moment from the book?
I really enjoyed the book, albeit it being very predictable to me. The thing I enjoyed most were the way Fia and Irian exchanged stories with each other!

    2. What do you think will happen in the next book?
I think the balance being sort of restores will bring its own challenges with them and Eala is still on the lose, so a confrontation will most definitely happen!

    • Emily

I think the confrontation between Fia and Eala will be so good to read! 👀💜

I did enjoy this and I liked the message about self acceptance and that she chose herself in the end. However, I found the development of Fia and Irian’s relationship felt really rushed and underdone.

I knew that Eala was going to be evil and she was.

I’m not sure I exactly understand how Fia could save Irian etc.

I will pick up book two when it comes out.

  • dnjreads

I really enjoyed the reading experience, I liked the writing a lot and the plot was interesting as well.

I did not see it coming when she sacrificed yourself but I really liked how that turned out.

I think we’re going to get the sister being more of a villain in the next book and I’m excited for that. I want Fia and Irian to be more of a couple in the next book.

Poor Irian. 🥺 At least Fia finally came to my conclusions. I hope it’s not too little too late though. Eala wants to be present at the Heartwood to wed Rogan at the same time Irian needs to be there with Fia to tithe the Sky-Sword. 🤨 To try to hurt Fia &/or Rogan (knowing their shared past), to try to steal the Sky-Sword during the tithing, or both? I still think Cathair sucks. Queen Mother has already shown her true colors. Rogan has fulfilled whatever prophesy Corra was riddling about. Irian is the black swan, as I predicted. He mentions the next heir (Fia) “healing the sorrow of the land” which sounds like what Corra said at the beginning: “Mend the broken heart. End the sorrow. Give what life is left, so we may see the morrow.” Maybe Irian’s broken heart &/or hers, the sorrow of the land in Tír na nÓg. Give whose life? Hers or his or both? The “we” “seeing the morrow” could mean the Folk, humans, or both, but I’m hoping it includes Irian & Fia somehow. Eala’s finally getting her hands dirty for her dark deeds, & it’s for drugging a man because he wouldn’t pledge his love &/or die for her. Disdainful. Disgusting. I’m glad Chandi chose the right thing in the end. The river stone being the conduit for the wild magic of the Sept of Antlers was something I hadn’t seen coming. I’m glad Irian & Fia both survived somehow. Now, I’m just curious what happens now since they’re still on the brink of war with an Eala that was only growing stronger when Fia sacrificed her willing heart to the Heartwood.
    Daily Q&A:
    Q:
1.) What did you think of A Feather So Black?
2.) Did you have a favourite moment from the book?
3.) What do you think will happen in the next book?
    A:
1.) I liked it. The flowery prose (get it 😜) added an extra layer to everything, & while some things I could guess at, there were still a few things I hadn’t seen coming.
2.) Almost every moment with Irian & Corra were my favorites.
3.) Irian & Fia have to save Rogan (& Chandi?), stop Eala, & return balance to the Fair Folk (since balance to nature was supposed to be from her sacrifice). Maybe they’ll produce a few heirs for their Septs. 😏 Fia might need to set a few things straight in the human realm (putting the Queen Mother in her place, restoring Rogan as prince/king of Bridei, our whatever else). Plus, we still need to figure out what the “islander” Gentry is going to do about calling in his kiss as repayment for saving her at the 1st Feis, figure out her heritage/how she became a changeling, & a few other things from Tír na nÓg.

    • Emily

I’m glad you enjoyed it! There are so many things that could happen in the next book! 🥰
