Happy Tuesday and welcome to day 2 of our readalong of A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft. I’m so excited to be reading this one with you, I hope you all love it!
That was quite the fun start yesterday, wasn’t it?

Today we’re reading from chapter 7 to the end of chapter 12. Let’s do this!

We begin today’s reading with a ball which is a great way to start in my opinion. Give me all the regal and whimsical vibes! But that certainly isn’t how Niamh feels; she is the target of some rather unkind words by many of the ball’s attendees due to her Machlish heritage.
Sebastian comes to the rescue and asks her to dance. But we finally learn his true motives for befriending her so much; he needs to pretend to court someone to which Niamh agrees.
We also learn that Niamh and Erin’s relationship has more to it and that they kissed before Erin left. I wonder if this could be connected to her leaving the palace before Niamh arrived.
Kit certainly isn’t as bad as he seems considering he makes sure Sebastian gets an allowance and is taken care of since his Uncle disowned him.
Things take an interesting turn at the ball when the dance floor reveal has been sabotaged; instead of a portrait of Infanta Rosa, there is a Machlish rune depicting the god of justice. A symbol previously used in the Machlish War of Independence.
But not only that, there is writing that accompanies it, singling out the Prince Regent.
Niamh finally realises that she is being used as a political pawn by the Prince Regent; to make himself look good by having a Machlish individual in his staff, instead of dealing with the political issues he is choosing to ignore – issues that the Tattler is emphasising.
Kit and Niamh end up alone together on the balcony during the ball where yet again he opens up to her a bit more. I love how she seems to be the only one he offers small pieces of himself to without even realising.
Suddenly a woman comes out to the balcony, finding them alone together which is grounds for a bad scandal. Kit then falls down the stairs on purpose to create a distraction, so Niamh can escape unnoticed through the other door and avoid such scandal. This is now the height of romance and I will accept nothing less. If a man threw himself down the stairs to protect my reputation I would simply fall in love.
The next morning Niamh receives a letter from Lovelace, basically asking her to be her spy within the palace. (I am so excited to find out more about Lovelace!)
I’m cackling at Infanta Rosa saying “Who’s this? An Assassin I hope?” when first meeting Niamh. Does anyone else adore her after so few words? She is so unfazed by everyone and SO funny. I have a feeling she and Niamh could become good friends, as well as her lady’s maid.
Also, her requesting her wedding gown be black lace? A girl of my own heart!
Kit saving Niamh from face-planting the floor when she was blindfolded during the game??? Now that’s what I call Prince Charming! He’s always there to protect her in some way and I suspect he has started to like our main character… What do you think?
However, things take a less than playful turn when during the game Kit’s magic hurts Sinclair; Kit is trembling and taken a back by the incident. Niamh comforts him – is she starting to like him too? 👀
After leaving a reply for Lovelace refusing to be their spy, Niamh receives a response which I also did not expect. Lovelace is understanding and doesn’t try to persuade or blackmail her. You know that infamous “she let out a breath she didn’t realise she’d been holding?” that’s me right now.
However my relief for our main character is short-lived, the white streak in her hair has increased. But I also find it kind of cute that Kit noticed something different with her hair.
The greenhouse scene. That is all.
In all seriousness, I am squealing so hard right now. When he wiped the dirt away from her face I about lost it. The way he is like this with ONLY her? I’m living for it.
Well, the plot certainly thickened in today’s chapters didn’t it?! I can’t wait to see how relationships develop in tomorrow’s reading and what Lovelace will do next…

1) Do you have an early suspicions about who Lovelace could be?
It has to be Sinclair, right? If not, Jack’s bride, though I don’t think she’d have anything to gain from it. Jack and Kit are out of the question, and it can’t be the characters from other kingdoms, like Rosa. For Lovelace to be so understanding too, it matches Sinclair’s overall demeanour. 🤔

I can see the heart-eyes already. They’re absolutely falling in love, no doubt about it!
3) What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
She has my whole heart already. Che’f’s kiss. Absolutely iconic. *insert Lady Gaga’s GIF showering her with compliments*
4) Do you suspect the Prince Regent is hiding something?
I suspect they’re broke. The salary thing, the speed of this wedding… Suspish.

I don’t really know? I know who it isn’t; Jack, Kit, Niamh or Rosa. Sinclair would be a possibility or Jack’s wife.

Yes, undoubtedly!

I really like her!

Of definitely! Or else he wouldn’t push so much for this marriage to happen so quickly. He needs them for something, money? military? I don’t know what exactly, but he is hiding the true reason behind it all
Like this section a lot! I feel like the story is starting to pick up, especially with the addition of other characters. Rosa and Miriam are so great! I loved the whole scene where they’re at the park. Getting to see all the magic in action… I’m wondering if maybe Kit hurt his mother in the past?
It definitely feels like the prince regent is hiding something but I’m not quite sure what? Maybe he’s very disorganized ? Lol why else would he miss her payment?
I like Kit a lot more now that we’re seeing different sides to him, the greenhouse scene was also so nice.
As for Lovelace… I’m leaning toward Sinclair? But Sofia feels possible as well? I definitely think Erin was a spy and got caught and sent away and that’s why she’s missing.

Currently I’m thinking it’s either Sinclair or Jack’s new bride, it has to be someone close enough to get all of the gossip easily without it being suspicious. I’m leaning towards Jack’s wife as I think she’d understand exactly why Niamh can’t risk her position

Yes! Niamh using her magic to soothe Kit’s anxiety… the greenhouse scene! Todays reading ending on that chapter is just mean 😂
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
She’s totally different from what I suspected and I love her for it! I think she and Niamh could be good friends.
Do you suspect the Prince Regent is hiding something?
Yes! Perhaps it’s connected to his father somehow? The father who is still sick but nobody has even mentioned? That’s a little weird.
Do you have an early suspicions about who Lovelace could be?
Hmm… I quite like the idea in the comments that maybe it’s Sinclair. Part of me kinda wants it to be Kit though even though I know that’s likely impossible.
Do you think Niamh and Kit are starting to like each-other?
Of course. They make me so giddy reading about them, they’re so freaking cute together. I can’t decide what scene I like more – the falling down the stairs or the greenhouse.
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
I think she’s absolutely iconic. However I’m worried about seeing how she’ll be affected by Kit and Niamh. I do hope Infanta Rosa and Niamh can become fast friends.

Hell Yes! I think they’re secretly broke and he’s too proud to say anything, hence why he’s really pushing for the wedding.

That’s a tough question… It has to be someone close to the royal family, with eyes everywhere. Maybe the maid?
2. Do you think Niamh and Kit are starting to like each-other?
Oh yes, absolutely! But I have a feeling that Niamh will sooner admit that to herself than Kit will.
3. What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
She is quite the character! I like her, and I have a feeling she will surprise us later on.
4. Do you suspect the Prince Regent is hiding something?
Yes, there is something mysterious about him… but I have no idea what I could be yet.

I am very bad with suspicions and theories and I have absolutely no idea who Lovelace could be. Maybe one of the maids who hears anything… but most likely a female. But it would make more sense if it would be someone who has a high position.
I think Niamh and Kit do like each other, but not yet very romantically. But it is getting there it seems. They are acting very sweet together now and I love that Kit is trusting Niamh more and he is very attentive.
I think Infanta Rosa is the most intriguing character in this book. She just does what she wants and it’s cool. I can’t wait to learn more about her.
The Prince Regent is definitely hiding something, but I have no idea what it could be.
1) Early suspicions about who Lovelace is? I don’t know, but I agree with everyone else that Gabriel Sinclair is in a prime position to get all the gossip. Or it could be the Price Regent’s wife.
2) Yes, they definitely have started to care for each other. We can see it blossoming more and more every time they are together.
3) I like Infanta Rosa. She is not how I expected her to be. I think she and Niamh can become good friends.
4) Yes, Jack is hiding something. Based on what we’ve seen it seems likely the kingdom is broke and they need the money that the bride’s family will bring.

I’m not sure who Lovelace could be. Maybe Jack’s wife, or could be Sinclair – has to be someone close or someone we’ve met already.

The Infanta Rosa is an icon, she’s great! I love her. Not suited for Kit, but I hope she finds someone!
And the Prince Regent is clearly hiding something – maybe they’re broke, as she had to ask to be paid. Something’s going on. Maybe he wants Kit to takeover, he did say that Parliament wouldn’t accept Kit as King unless he was more acceptable and that’s apparently what the marriage will do.
Right now I suspect of Sophia, she is not included in the court and I think that everybody in the palace is underestimate her.
I think they are falling in love, jack is already suspect about is brother!
I love Rosa, she remember me of Rosa Diaz of Brooklyn nine nine! Maybe Allison was inspired by that character!

My initial thought was Erin since she conspicuously disappeared, but how we she know these types of things?
Niamh and Kit obviously like each other, and yet they both say they’re gay? Did I miss something? Have they not heard of bisexuality? So confused.
I actually think Rosa and Kit might not be totally miserable together. They have the same sharp wit haha.

Infanta Rosa’s character was NOT what I was expecting but I kind of love it. I think that her and Miriam may have a little romance of their own that will come out soon…
I think that Kit is Lovelace. It fits with how he always seems so disgruntled at court and then let Niamh get away with not being a spy

I’m still going back and fourth with this because it’s someone close who knows a lot, it could be anyone from Sinclair to Sofia to Rosa! It’s so hard! I’m excited to continue and keep guessing!

I love her, she’s iconic and gives me Camila Mendes vibes (specifically Veronica in Riverdale vibes) she is so against the norm but in the best way. She speaks her truth, she speaks her mind and isn’t afraid to!

I think she’s in the closet and doesn’t speak for herself, in public. In private she’s awesome!

Absolutely, I think he’s hiding the fact that they have no money and he is a terrible ruler.

I think it could be Sofia or Erin. Erin due to the fact she’s mysteriously disappeared and Sofia as she’s the least suspect / quiet.

Yes absolutely- I think they are so sweet together 🥰

I like her – she has a dark sense of humour and I like how strong she is – she knows what’s expected of her but instead of hating it or cowering down she embraces it.

Oh definitely- could it be the palace is poor given the situation with Niamhs pay.
I just love Infanta Rosa the assasin scene had me laughing so much and the lihgtning at the games shes got game I like it

Yes definitely. I have a feeling they have little money or something along the lines of that but the speed of the wedding is giving broke vibes. Plus Niamhs missing pay – I feel like that wasn’t a coincidence

I absolutely love her. While I want Kit to be with Niamh instead, I very much hope that Rosa and Niamh become friends.

I have no clue who Lovelace could be, but I do believe it is someone we already know. Maybe Erin, or the head of staff ms Knight? Servants do have a way to go unnoticed while noticing everything..
Niamh & Kit are definitely growing font of each other. But I do have to admit I don’t know if they’re meant to be endgame.
Infanta Rosa seems like a character who thinks multiple steps ahead, just like her fondness of chess. I love that she speaks her mind about her discontent about the state of this court and its customs.
If Jack is hiding something.. is out of the question for me. Not sure if he is simply covering something up, don’t believe he’s masterminding a great nefarious scheme. Only the next chapters will tell…

I think Lovelace is someone close to the royal family. I am curious if it is Sebastian. Honestly this reminds me of gossip girl so much.

I I think they are beginning to like one another however; they are fighting that attraction. Especially since Kit has royal obligations.
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
I’m curious by her I want to know more about her motives and why she’s there. I’m curious with her fashion as well.

Yes. I think many different people are hiding things but for many different reasons.

I actually don’t know, I think it might end up being someone that Niamh is close to (almost like Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton)

I do, I think there is definitely chemistry between the two characters. I have found their scenes together to be quite funny as they are quite the opposites.
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
She is very interesting and with her wearing all black seems to me that she is preparing for a funeral rather than a wedding.

Most definitely, what he is hiding… I’m not sure.
So far the book has been really whimsical and I’ve really been enjoying it. I love the Regency period and high society, this book is ticking all the boxes so far.

no, but I think it’s someone we already met before, one of the characters is playing.

This book is really cute. It’s like a warm hug. I’m enjoying the cosy vibes a lot.
I think Kit accidentally hurt someone with his powers – his mother maybe? I don’t know I think that’s really sad if it’s the case so I hope not.
I’m not sure who Lovelace is… I am more just vibing with this story than trying to figure it out tho.
The balcony scene. 😍 I like Sinclair & Miriam, so far. Learning Sinclair’s secret only makes me that much more curious about whatever incident(s) sent Kit away for 4 years. The greenhouse scene. 😍

A:
1.) It must be someone close enough to be involved in noble society but also close enough to the royal family to know who to contact to be spies within the palace. I doubt Lovelace is Machlish, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re outside Avlish. Wouldn’t it be scandalous if it was Sofia? She only married Jack 1.5 years before, but Lovelace has been at Jack in The Tattler for at least 3 years, so it’s probably someone else though.
2.) I do. They’ve reached an awkward friendship, but if she’s already imagined him kissing her while he’s already blushing at wiping her cheek, I think they’ve both already considered the other as more than friends.
3.) I think she’s a wildfire waiting to happen. The little stunt with the lightening was ominous, she’s clearly dramatic & a self-proclaimed political pressure applicator.
4.) Certainly. Whatever his motive is for acting out of character to let so much go unsolved & blatantly avoided has yet to be revealed to any of our major characters yet.

Hmmm I think maybe the lady who first escorted her in? I’m never good at guessing though haha

Yessss. Also the fact that they are both bi(? I think?) I am LIVING.
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
She’s hilarious. She’s giving me Adam’s family but make it Latina 😂

I love Rosa! I feel like her and Kit parallel each other with the attitude of “I’m being forced to do this, but that doesn’t mean I’ll pretend to be happy about it.”

There’s definitely space for characters we don’t know, but I’m currently suspicious about Sofia, just because we saw her on the balcony. Otherwise, I don’t think Lovelace is anyone we’ve met quite yet.
Do you think Niamh and Kit are starting to like each-other?
Definitely! The small and big things they’re starting to notice about one another is telling. I especially like how Niamh recognized Kit’s kindness is “like a bloom surrounded by thorns”. And Kits protectiveness and catering to Niamh, like when he brought her lemonade. So cute!
What do you think of Infanta Rosa’s character so far?
I love goth women, but I’m curious if Rosa’s actually content with being this way or if it’s also a protection. She made a big speech about how not feeling emotions protects her, but I’m sure it’s frustrating to be treated like a pawn when she’s clearly both powerful and intelligent.
Do you suspect the Prince Regent is hiding something?
Absolutely, we haven’t heard about the king and I suspect his illness is something awful. Jack is also protective of his brother, and with him being concerned that if he died without an heir that Kit wouldn’t get the throne, makes me extra suspicious that something is targeting their family in particular.
