Hello fairy friends!

Happy Monday and welcome to day 1 of our readalong of Darker By Four by June CL Tan. I’m so excited to be reading this one with you, I hope you all love it!

Before we get into the book, how are we all doing today? I hope you all had a wonderful weekend full of amazing books and relaxing vibes!

Since today is day 1, we’ll be reading from the beginning to the end of Chapter 9. It’s time to get comfy and cosy with our book and get started!

When you’ve finished today’s section, catch up with me in the comments down below so we can discuss the beginning of the book. Happy reading!

Please be warned, the following section will include spoilers for Darker By Four by June CL Tan from the beginning to Chapter 9. Please only read on if you have finished this section!

What an intriguing prologue! Are you as hooked as I am? Who is this ‘her’ he wishes to forget? Why did he disappear? There’s a whirlwind of questions swirling in my mind, and I’m eager to unravel the answers!

The food mentioned in the first line of chapter one sounds absolutely heavenly! I need it right now. Is anyone else suddenly feeling a pang of hunger? I think warm rice, pickled vegetables and a crispy pork cutlet might just be a perfect reading snack… 👀

In the first chapter, we encounter Nikai, the head reaper, as the story sets the stage right before the events shown in the prologue. We also learn of something called ‘the blight’ – a supernatural virus that infects newly departed souls, turning them into vicious monsters.

A Reaper’s job is to guided souls into the afterlife where they can reside in one of the ten courts of hell, until their individual cycle of reincarnation is up – can’t say I’m jealous of their job if I’m being totally honest…

Nikai is accompanied by Four, one of the ten kings, at a car wreck where numerous souls await collection. Four once saved Nikai in the afterlife, providing him with purpose, a home, and friendship.

The first King known as One swiftly arrives at the scene and rushes to a car in the pileup, finding a passenger carrying a baby who faces imminent death. After a quick exchange with Four, One reveals spotting a dying star’s spirit trail, signalling an anomaly in the human world that points directly to the unborn child. Convinced of the child’s destined purpose, One insists on its survival.

Four agrees to return the woman’s soul to her body, ensuring her and her child’s survival, in exchange for a glimpse at a discovered artefact, to which One agrees. Four then pockets the artefact.

Not long after their deal is complete, Four acts a little strangely towards Nikai and tells him he is ‘going to see the stars’. It’s only later that night it becomes apparent that Four has disappeared entirely.

Now, we’re shifting to Rui’s POV, eighteen years later. She’s a cadet and exorcist in training. With the worsening blight since the incident with Four, I suspect Rui might be the rescued child previously mentioned. What do you think?

During a training exercise, we get a glimpse into Rui’s past: her mother is deceased and her father mostly absent. Four years ago, unaware of her high yangqi (which revenants are attracted to), Rui’s life changed at a night market when a man attacked, killing her mother. She suspected him to be a hybrid, seen only as myth. But could this uncaught revenant play a key role in this story? Do you have any theories?

Bodies have been turning up in alleyways or sprawled out on the sidewalks with no sign of psychical injury and it’s clear revenants can quite easily see and kill humans.

We meet Zizi, a mage offering various services, even illegal ones, lounging in his striped pyjamas. Zizi tells her he has a job for her, a spell that needs testing. Side note: it’s incredibly cute that he has a nickname for her – I’m big fan of nicknames in books, are you?

We also learn that the night she lost her mother he had appeared and told her not be afraid; they’ve been friends ever since. (I want a pair of the ghost earrings he wears, they sound SO cute!)

We meet Yiran, grandson of the Exorcist Guild head and half-brother to the infamous captain Ash. Left on his grandfather’s doorstep by his mother, he’s had no contact with her since. Having no magic in a family of magical/exorcist members, he faces a strained relationship with his grandfather.

Summoned by his grandfather, Yiran is told to leave for tarnishing the family’s reputation. Emotional, he heads to the dangerous Night Market, where he seeks a spell from a mage to trap a revenant and make it visible to non-magical people. However, he’s promptly shown the door.

Yiran and Rui meet at The Night Market, but their encounter is far from pleasant. Rui learns she’s late for the academy, where a curfew is in place due to a strange revenant on the loose.

A woman runs toward Rui, screaming about a monster around the corner with a boy trying to fight it—Yiran. But this revenant is unlike any Rui has seen before, with its strange appearance and tentacles.

After exchanging blows with the revenant, Rui gets struck in the ribs by its tentacles, feeling something crack, and it begins draining her life force. In a desperate move, she uses the experimental talisman given to her by Zizi, to transfer her Yangqi to Yiran so he can continue the fight. Instantly, Rui notices a hollow sensation within her.

Thrown by the revenant, Rui crashes into trees, sustaining serious injuries. Meanwhile, Yiran, fuelled by Rui’s Yangqi, wields her spiritual blades to defeat the revenant.

Severely injured and bleeding, Yiran carries Rui to his car. Despite her condition, she insists on being taken to Mort Street, Zizi’s home, instead of the guild or hospital.

Well, that was quite the start! So much action and lots of interesting characters! I can’t wait for tomorrow’s reading!

What are your thoughts so far?

Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?

Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?

And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am? 😍

See you tomorrow for another day of reading!

Love,
Jodie

    Initial thoughts:
there is a lot going on so far in terms of world building.
I like how different each point of view is – like they’re three good points to see different elements of the world from.
Rui feels like the main character though because she’s had more chapters from her point of view and she’s the thing that’s connecting the other two points of view so far.
I did have to re-read a few sentences to make sure I was taking everything in, but I was also really tired while reading so that might be why.

I’m enjoying the vibes so far – I like urban fantasies when they’re done well.

I think Rui definitely faced something different 4 years ago… But not sure what it was.
No idea re Four. Will just have to read on and see.

    • Jodie

Yes, the different POV’s give us so much more insight into their world it’s so intriguing! 🤩

  • Amelia Jayne

Oh im really loving this read so far! I love the urban setting and the world building has been so good. Im really loving how we are getting 3 completely different views too.

I have no clue so far how four is going to come into play – or what happened to rui four years ago. Maybe the number 4 has something to do with it now ive typed it out?

I also feel like zizi is a character to watch. For some reason i get shady vibes like they arent who they say they are?

Really looking forward to reading on!

    • Jodie

Yay! So happy to hear you’re enjoying it!💜 The multiple POV’s definitely adds so much more intrigue to the story.😍

  • Tasha

What are your thoughts so far? – actually quite enjoying this one so far which is surprising as it’s not one I would have picked up for myself. I loved Nikais pov so I hope we get to see more of him soon.

Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared? – not sure but I think it maybe has something to do with Ones new talisman.

Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago? – I think she believes what she saw but I’m not sure if this is because she actually saw a hybrid, or someone wanted her to think that.

And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am? 😍. -definitely an intriguing world so far – can’t wait to read more tomorrow!

    • Jodie

We’re so glad you’re enjoying it! 💜 Oooo that’s an interesting theory!

  • Rachel

I’m really enjoying this book so far! The prologue had me hooked from the start.
I’m not sure about Fours disappearance🤔 I definitely agree Rui must be they baby that was saved though.
I think yes she must have faced a hybrid revenant – unless it was something else we don’t know about yet?
Also loving the vibes😍 and I love Zizi as a character!

My brain while reading today’s chapters: The worldbuilding is amazingly intricate and I love how it draws inspiration from Chinese mythology and also plays around with Chinese numerology.
I like that we get multiple POVs (and not just of the main characters) and they are done very well, with each character having their individual voice. Right now I’m curious if the Reapers and Exorcists are aware of each other’s existence and how does one group influence the other in the bigger scheme of the world. I’m convinced Four’s disappearance has something to do with what One told him about Rui having an important fate, and I think it’s no coincidence the number 4 keeps popping up in Rui’s life, this book is very clever with numbers.

My brain ever since I finished reading today’s chapters: Ghostie earrings 😃 (It’s safe to say I’m gonna need a pair too, now)

I’m in love with this book so far, and I hope we get more chapters from Nikai’s POV too!

Unrelated: my phone is CONVINCED the comment box is a password field and won’t give me my full keyboard and is prompting me after every letter to autofill my login info. It’s never done that before. Wtf?!

    1. I have mixed feelings so far. Modern stories are always harder for me to get into, but we’ll see how it goes!

    2. Something related to the thingie he borrowed from One?

    3. Maybe…I think she faced something unusual, but what exactly remains to be seen.

    4. Still undecided but I like Rui and Yiran so far. Zizi is my fave and I hope we see a lot more of him!

What are your thoughts so far?
I am enjoying the world. The magic system seems really cool and I am enjoying the 3 POVs giving us a glimpse of their lives.

Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?
I am thinking Four is gone because he is investigating the hybrid revenants. Something is disturbing the souls or fate or something on the finite realm.

Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?
In terms of fighting it? I don’t think she would have survived very long. The academy gave her a significant amount of training, but I think even with her advanced talents at the time, the Hybrid would have proved too powerful.

And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am?
I am enjoying the vibes. As someone who isn’t really captivated by Urban fantasy, I am finding this one off to a good start and am curious to see where it goes!

  • Tiffany Salangsang

Great start – the world and characters are so interesting. I also enjoy the writing – the way she describes things.

I have no idea why 4 disappeared – but it was interesting to find out she was the miracle baby from that night.

definitely as intrigue as you! love the world, and want to see the characters interact.

    1. What are your thoughts so far?
I am intruiged and really loving it so far!! Such in interesting world!

    2. Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?
It might have to do with the artifact he got from One, or the fact that he saved someones live (again?). The exact reason I don’t know, but I really wanna find out!

    3. Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?
I’m not sure if hybrid revenants are real, but it certainly was an abnormality that she faced!

    4. And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am? 😍
    I AM LOVING IT!

    • Jodie

Yes, the urban fantasy setting and the magic in this world is making it SO intriguing! 😍 So happy to hear you’re loving it. 🥰

I am so obsessed with this read already!!!

I wanna know more about why Four left?? Did it have go do with bringing back Rui? I dont even have any guesses.

I love the POVs Rui and Yiran are so interesting and I love Zizi too!!!

  • fatima

I’m loving this so far! Rui reminds me of Nova from Renegades for some reason. I love her POV, as well as Yiran’s and Nikai’s. Zizi definitely stole the show though 🥰

Honestly, I have no idea why Four disappeared – my first thought was the talisman, but we’ll see! I like that there are multiple mysteries going on, it’s super intriguing.

Also, are any fellow anime fans catching the Jujutsu Kaisen Easter eggs? Gojo’s Café? 👀

The urban vibes are amazing so far. I can’t wait to learn more about the underworld and the courts of Hell!

So happy you’re enjoying it so far! 🥰 Yes, there are so many mysteries that kept me hooked. I may have tabbed Gojo’s cafe for that very reason! 😂

  • Andy Calladine

Loving it so far, im getting Bleach and KDrama vibes.
I do love a good reaper story.
I wonder if Four was born reincarnated as the baby!

For some reason I wasn’t able to login at the beginning 😅

What are your thoughts so far?
    – I’m actually excited about it so far. I like how the world is building up

Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?

    – It’s definitely has something to do with Rui and that thing he was curious to see🤔

Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?
    – Honestly, I would be surprised if it’s true

And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am?
    Love it so far☺️

  • danica.brnot

Ok I might not have been intrigued buy the book from the start but now that the exchange happened I am all in I need to know how and if she will get her power back. I am sure that Yiran wont give it back. Poor Rui.

Do I think Rui saw a hybrid 4 years ago quite possibly but I have a theory that someone is making this things stronger and different just a hunch.

Do I like the eerie setting yes I love mysterious and supernatural settings and beings

I’m starting a little late but so far I am enjoying this book.
The prologue and first chapter left me very intriged.
The worldbuilding sounds really interesting with reapers and exorcists at the same time.
Rui is definitly the baby they saved 18 years ago. I thought her mother’s life would be spared for a shorter period of time, but she outlasted 14 years?
Zizi sounds really cool, living his pajamas clothing style.
I want to read more about the reappers and the kings, maybe the artifact will get mentioned again…

What are your thoughts so far?
I’ll am really enjoying this book. It captured my interest right off that bat.

Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?
I think it’s a cause and effect. Save the woman and baby and someone else must be lost in their place.

Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?

  • TupaKitty_Reads

The 10 Kings of Hell/Underworld collect artifacts. One asked Four to make an exception using his artifact to save an unborn baby (also the mother, temporarily). 4 disappeared afterwards. Nikai is the Head Reaper of Four’s Division. Baby is now an 18yrs old Exorcist cadet named Rui about to graduate. Her best friend, Ada, is her partner at the academy. Ash is the youngest Exorsist Captain at 21, the grandson of the Head of the Guild, & seems like an asshole to Rui. Zizi is a magic-using non-Exocist (mage) friend that saved 14yrs old Rui after her mom died from a (hybrid) Revenant attack on her birthday. Rui tests spells created by Zizi, & this time, it’s extra dangerous because it involves removing spiritual energy (ideally, from a Revenant to make it vulnerable, but with a slim chance it could steal hers if they touch). Yiran is another (magicless) grandson (a bastard) of the Head of the Guild & ½brother of Ash who is getting exiled. Rui’s father was a Dr before her mom died & is now dodging loan sharks. Yiran wants a spell to capture a Revenant & make it visible to everyone, even normies, to get back at his grandfather for exiling him. During his tantrum of knocking over offerings after the mage rejected his request, he meets Rui. Rui realizes he Ash’s “bratty kid brother,” but they go their separate ways when the Night Hunt sirens go off, & Rui finds out her patrol was canceled due to the Night Hunt in the area tracking a “strange Revenant” that Rui thinks might be the Hybrid that killed her mom. It’s not – it’s something else. Yiran is trying to fight the Revenant with a baseball bat (because “normies” can see it), Rui’s injury from the morning nearly gets her killed before she uses Zizi’s spell on Yiran to transfer her yangqi to him, so he can use her spiritual swords to finish off the Revenant. After he defeats the Revenant, he tries to bring Rui to his grandfather, but she convinces him to bring her to Mort St (Zizi) instead.
    Daily Q&A:
    Q:
1.) What are your thoughts so far?
2.) Do you have any theories on why Four disappeared?
3.) Do you think Rui could have really faced a hybrid revenant four years ago?
4.) And lastly, are you loving the eerie vibes and intrigue of the revenants/underworld as much as I am? 😍
    A:
1.) That was a lot of information to take in as we met Four, Nikai, One, Rui, Ada, Ash, Yiran, Zizi, the Head of the Guild, Rui’s dad,  etc not to mention all of the major events (18 years ago plus this 1 day in the present).
2.) I’m not sure. I thought maybe he was trying to get to the realm of the living &/or maybe he needed to exchange his existence for the baby’s (Rui’s) life &/or maybe something to do with the artifact he “borrowed” from One.
3.) She was 14, so I think she could’ve seen exactly what she remembered, despite the trauma of seeing her mother killed & almost being killed herself. Considering Fate saw fit to intervene because she was needed for a specific person, that might be exactly why she saw a Hybrid & is sure of their existence regardless of anyone believing her, evidence, etc.
4.) Yep. The revenants are a new, creepy-ish twist & this whole “4, si, death” thing that keeps popping up, but I’ve always enjoyed stories about soul reapers as well as Asian folklore/mythology.

PS: I’m seeing a lot of Bleach parallels with a little JJK & (C)K-Drama vibes. 😍 Will Rukia, I mean, Rui get her spiritual energy back??
