India

Gorgeous photo byΒ @elenathereader!

Hey fairy fam!

It’s the final section, are you ready to find out how Sing Me To Sleep ends?

Today we’re reading from Chapter 41 to the end of the book.

Grab a snack, get comfy and let’s read!

Please be warned, the following section will include spoilers for Sing Me To Sleep by Gabi Burton, from chapter 41 to the end of the book. Please only read on if you’ve finished Sing Me To Sleep!

-!SPOILERS!-

After the big reveal in yesterday’s section, all hell is breaking loose! Saoirse gives Hayes a note before running to retrieve a crossbow she stashed under the floorboards earlier. Hayes launches himself on her. Two guards (who are not really Royal guards) retrieve blades hidden in an ice sculpture.

Saoirse takes out both of the guards and people start yeeting themselves off the boat to safety. Hayes has disappeared (heeding her note) but Devlyn, Zensen and Jeune close in to arrest Saoirse. Devlyn loses it and slaps her across the face before being ordered to leave by Zensen.

Jeune convinces Zensen to leave too so she can speak to Saoirse as a friend, she tries to save Saoirse but Laa’el interrupts.

It turns out Laa’el is the one working for the Resistance and she drained Saoirse’s keil bead. Laa’el reveals that there is an army on the other side of the barrier ready to kill anyone who disagrees with their version of Keirdre.

Erasmus bursts in and reveals he is her Employer.

Laa’el tells Saoirse they have Rain and they will kill her if Hayes isn’t dead by midnight.

Saoirse heads to where Hayes is hidden and, when they leave, Jeune steps out, giving Saoirse a crossbow and saying she’s on their side. She takes them to a small cottage and we meet her wife, an earth fae called Sherida (so cute!). We find out that all of Jeune’s lies have been to protect Sherri.

Saoirse dreamweaves to Drina and takes Hayes and Jeune with her. Drina comes up with a plan for Hayes to drink luneweed (a deadly poison for fae) mixed with water so Saoirse can stop it before it reaches his stomach and kills him.

We finally find out what Rain is: she’s… drumroll… HUMAN!

Saoirse takes Hayes to the dock and demands to see her sister alive before she kills him. Spektryl brings Rain out, but Spektryl is CARRICK. Can we stop with these crazy reveals? My heart can’t take it.

Carrick thought his plan would make Saoirse hate the Royals and join them but he didn’t count on her falling for Hayes.

Saoirse and Hayes perform their rehearsed poison death but Carrick still holds a knife to Rain’s throat, demanding to know where the King and Queen are. Saoirse has a hunch and tells them the portrait room in the castle.

They tell her to throw Hayes’s body in the sea and she does, thinking she can jump in and save him once they’re gone. But then they throw Rain into the water too with a weight attached to her waist so Saoirse jumps in for her on instinct.

Saoirse searches for them in the murky water to find that Rain is above her, holding Hayes and the weight is gone. Rain untied the weight while they were talking and took it off once she was in the water.

Saoirse sings to Keirdre’s people and tells them to go to the palace to protect their King and Queen.

In the portrait room, Erasmus is toying with the King in a sword fight, he has cotton in his ears so Saoirse can’t sing to him but she takes over for the King and they fight with both blades and air/water. Hayes, the King and Queen all join in pelting water at Erasmus until he falls.

The King goes to check his pulse and Erasmus slashes his torso with his blade. The water urges Saoirse to kill and she heads downstairs to Carrick but Hayes manages to persuade her not to kill him.

Three days later, Saoirse attends a meeting in the King’s war room. Hayes is now King.

He announces that they will continue with what the late King wanted for Keirdre and enforce its laws stronger than ever and they will bring everyone that was involved in his father’s murder (including Saoirse) to justice.

Saoirse waits for everyone else to leave before confronting him. He embraces her and apologises, he says he needed to say that but he will change things. He tells her that he would put her above anyone.

She leans in to kiss him and he pulls away. She tastes his fear.

Hayes reveals that he searched his father’s office and found correspondence between him and Reysha Harker (the woman who was supposedly murdered years ago for getting to close to Szeiryna). This means there’s a way outside the barrier without taking it down.

Hayes tasks Saoirse with finding the way out, finding Reyshka Harker and reporting back on what kind of army they’d be dealing with if they brought the barrier down.

Her final words are β€œI’m in. Your Majesty.”

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy?
Do you have any theories for the sequel?
What did you think of the book overall?

My heart is still thumping from all of those crazy revelations. Gabi Burton sure knows how to write an explosive conclusion!

Thank you all so much for joining us for another FairyLoot readalong. I hope you had as much fun as I did and we’ll see you soon for the next one!

Love,
India

I literally had no clue that carrik would be the bad guy, i thought he would be the one genuine friend for Saiorse. Turns out it was jeune who was genuine.
I think the next book will be Saiorse going through the barrier and finding out whats beyond. Sje might find more sirens and she might have to face off the army waiting to destroy the kingdom ?

Overall i gave the book a 4.25, i did love the book and the twists and turns however i felt that the character development was a bit lacking and the prince fell in love Saiorse too quickly. Its great for a debut novel and I’ll definitely be reading the sequel.

There’s a common theme happening in books at the moment (at least ones that I’ve been reading) where the ‘best friend’ of the main character ends up betraying everyone for some higher purpose…so I suppose I should have seen this one coming. The hints were there!
I’m interested to see what world has been built outside Kierdre, and I want Saoirse to find her people and learn that killing is not all that sirens are good for. I also in a way don’t really want Hayes and Saoirse to end up together, but it’ll be interesting to see where that leads.
I quite enjoyed this book. It read easily and tied together its loose ends. I was hoping for Rain to be something more exciting than just a human but I suppose we can’t have everything!

    Thank you for the readalong!

    1) No, heck no! Carrick seemed like such a good friend for Saoirse. I loved their banter. And how could he kidnap Rain? He was like an older brother to her. His betrayal was shocking and hurtful.

    2) Yes, there is a next book! I wasn’t so sure and I couldn’t find information anywhere if it was a duology or trilogy. I’m so excited to return to Keirdre. I think Saoirse will find her way to the barrier, but she will be tested on whose side is she on – with the other creatures of the Resistance or with Hayes. Her heart and mind will be at odds. I also think Hayes will do whatever he can to exonerate Saoirse. Let’s be real, they love each other, but like with so many twists of this book, I can see yet another thorn being revealed in the next!

    3) I LOVED this book. I already enjoy books about the sea and sirens, so I knew going in I would enjoy it. But I did not expect to LOVE it as much as I do. I’m quite obsessed honestly. For a debut book, Gabi is phenomenal. The world, characters, and all the mystery kept me so intrigued, then you add the banter and romance between Saoirse and Hayes *swoon*. It was fast-paced without a dull moment. I can’t champion this book enough. I’m so happy y’all picked this book!

This was my first FairyLoot readalong, and I had so much fun joining in on the questions. Thank you so much!

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy? I did but then told myself, no way, that’s her best friend. It couldn’t be him. Then I gasped so loud when Saorise was describing his clothes.

Do you have any theories for the sequel? I really hope Saoirse finds more sirens!

What did you think of the book overall? This was my first siren book. I enjoyed it! The way I was on edge during the book, haha.

The thought that Carrik was the blackmailer did cross my mind, and Laa’el’s reaction to Saoirse’s question about the returned money confirmed the blackmailer had to be someone close to Saoirse since they knew the money was important to her. From there it wasn’t hard to guess Carrik. He had both motive and opportunity.

I think the sequel will take place outside the barrier. I’m really excited to learn more about all the other creatures of this world and am excited to see what the plot of the next book will be.

Overall I think it was a solid book. I really liked the plot and mysteries, and the world building was interesting and new to me. Sadly I couldn’t really find myself caring for any of the characters aside from the main character. The other characters didn’t really get enough page time or growth. I also do think the book would have been better without the romance, but I typically don’t like romance in books so maybe that’s just me. I’m looking forward to the sequel and will definitely pick it up.

    1) Honestly this reveal didn’t break only Saoirse’s heart but mine as well. I loved Carrick so much and I couldn’t believe he could do something like that. On the other hand the situation in the kingdom is horrible, and what happened to his family was truly traumatic, so I can totally see how he was driven to do what he did. Hayes underlying the similarities between what Carrick and Saoirse both have done makes me hopeful that maybe in the sequel we could have a redemption arc for Carrick.
    2) I have zero theories for the sequel, I only think we will learn more about other creatures and I think it would be amazing to see a city or country of sirens!
    3) I really loved it! I found it amazing! The world-building was totally captivating and the final was one twist after the other! I am also happy that Saoirse and Hayes didn’t end up together, not because I don’t want them to be, but because I think they need time to truly know each other with no more lies and deception between them. So overall I definitely can’t wait to read the sequel.

I definitely didn’t expect Carrick to be a bad guy at all!

I also feel like this is gonna be an unpopular opinion but I did not like the book. I just really did not like saoirise character. I felt like her manipulations were too much and just got annoying. Prince Hayes was an amazing character but he deserves better.

I don’t know, I just didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. If she didn’t manipulate every single situation then it would’ve been better I think. Some honesty would’ve done her some good.

    A great read along though!

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy?
I did not trust any characters really but I was not expecting Carrick to be the one blackmailing Saoirse. It is sad that he was the one person that she trusted all along and he was using her front he very beginning.

Do you have any theories for the sequel?
I think Saoirse will see that her kingdom is so far back and that outside the barrier is more accepting of other creatures other than just the fae. I think she will also find more SIren and learn more about her kind and the history of her people. I do expect the romance between Hayes and Saoirse to grow however, I think something will impact it and stress the relationship.

What did you think of the book overall?
I really enjoyed this book. I have not been able to finish some of the read-a-longs recently because I wasn’t jiving with the book however, this was a book I looked forward to picking up each night and seeing what was going to happen. I did struggle stopping last night at the end of section four but I am glad I waited to read the last section until tonight.

    1) No, I didn’t see Carrick coming until right before Saoirse did.

    2) Hm, I think Saoirse will find more of her kind on the other side of the barrier and find out if what Carrick said about sirens is true (that they don’t have to kill). I also think either Jeune or Carrick himself will come with her (or maybe both). Jeune because they’re now besties and they trust each other. And Carrick because they should have someone who knows a bit about the army on the other side. Hopefully Rain gets a bigger role as well. And the Queen has more agency too. But I don’t see how Hayes will be able to make such big changes in very little time. We’ll see. There’s also the matter of untying his life force to the barrier.

    3) I wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t really connect to it. That’s alright, though. Not all books can be our faves. πŸ™‚

I definitely did not see the betrayal from Carrik coming! He was one of the last people I would’ve suspected to be working against Saoirse.

I think in the sequel it could be dual pov of Hayes and Saoirse. Saoirse’s pov being beyond the barrier and Hayes pov trying to make Keirdre a better place.

Overall I loved this book so much and it was obviously going to be 5 stars from the beginning ?

  • Alex Shaffer

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy? Yes, unfortunately I called it. Sometimes, YA books are predictable. But, don’t get me wrong it was still good.
Do you have any theories for the sequel? Saoirse will cross the border and find all sorts of creatures. I think she’ll have a hard time adjusting and she’ll feel like she has to protect everyone. I think she’s used to being a hero or β€œmonster” and will have a hard time coming across people who are as strong as she is.
What did you think of the book overall? Overall, very good book! Probably 4.5/5 stars. I’m super excited for the next one.

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy? I definitely did not see that coming

Do you have any theories for the sequel? I think we’ll see more of the other creatures and more politics

What did you think of the book overall?
I really enjoyed this one! I was a little sceptical at first but after the first section it really captured my interest and I didn’t want to put it down. I cannot wait to see what happens in the sequel. I’m giving this one 4.5 stars

  • Amy Kosta

Did you have any idea that Carrick was a bad guy?

No I had no idea!! Honestly I just thought he was a background character, what a plot twist!

Do you have any theories for the sequel?

I think that Saoirse will find other sirens and convince Hayes to take down the barrier, but I imagine there’s going to be a lot of convincing the army on the other side to back down!

What did you think of the book overall?

I loved it! My new favourite book of 2023 so far! I need the sequel NOW!!!

  • Sophia

I did not think it would be Carrick, but looking back at his history, the clues were there.

I am not sure if I want to read more if Hayes and Saoirse are separated for the majority of the next book, but it might be interesting to see who is on the other side of the barrier.

Overall, I found the book easily readable. However, the character development was lacking in some areas, and I had trouble buying why Hayes immediately falls for Saoirse and is so quick to forgive her actions, especially unaliving his best friend! Surely Hayes and Felix deserve better ?

  • Jennifer

I had guessed that Carrick was behind the blackmail etc. It just made sense to me that he would be in the resistance after what had been done to his mother & he was close enough to Saoirse to slip the note, blackmail her etc.

I had also guessed that Rain was human.

I had not guessed about the witch and Erasmus’s involvement thought I knew at least one of the Prince’s guards was likely involved i hadnt speculated too muchon exactly who it could be.

It looks like Hayes is going to have a struggle to maintain the throne and prove himself capable etc. He is probably going to be plotted against in book two.

There may be a war with the army on the other side of the barrier.

I’m glad Hayes has not jumped straight into a romance with Saoirse. The way he feels about her despite all the murders she has committed, including his best friends death is kind of toxic. Also a public relationship between them would probably make him a very unpopular king and make it very unlikely he will be able to hold on to his throne.

I think if Saoirse becomes a valuable asset to Hayes and the Kingdom in her mission beyond the barrier maybe she can redeem herself for past mistakes (mass murders) and they can have a publically acknowledgeeld relationship one day.
