Hello fairies!

Happy Tuesday and welcome to day 2 of our readalong of The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim.Β I’m so excited to be reading this one with you, I hope you all love it!

That was quite the entertaining start yesterday, wasn’t it?

I hope you’re all having a fun time reading so far and enjoying all the grumpy x grumpy vibes!

Today we’re reading from chapter 10 to the end of chapter 15. Let’s do this!

When you’ve finished today’s section, catch up with me in the comments down below so we can discuss the beginning of the book. Happy reading!

Please be warned, the following section will include spoilers for The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim from Chapter 10 to Chapter 15. Please only read on if you have finished this section!

-!SPOILERS!-

Well, the first line of today’s reading has me feeling a little queasy… But I love how immediately after we jump to Seokga and Hani being mean to each-other, again.

Those inky shadows coming from the cut and hovering in the air have me freakedddd out! Seokga instantly knows what is responsible: an Eoduksini – a darkness demon that is able to worm its way into the minds of others and produce nightmares, before ultimately feeding on their souls and killing them.

They are also supposed to be confined to Jeoseung, so how did one escape into the human world? Maybe it’s my trust issues but I’m very suspicious and think someone is behind it…
Hani thinks that the Eoduksini could have been part of Seokga’s fallen army and wants revenge, making him it’s prime target… If Hani doesn’t kill him first that is. πŸ˜‚

They suspect that the Eoduksini must be possessing someones body as without a body of flesh and blood they can’t remain in the mortal realm for long. Well that’s going to make me suspicious of EVERYBODY from here on out.

“You’re insufferable.”
“You’re intolerable.”Β
PLEASE JUST KISS ALREADY.

Emperor Hwanin has requested Seokga meet with him for dinner and considering it’s been 628 years since he tried to overthrow him, it’s pretty awkward.

Learning more about their father is making me kind of hate him… He’s the god of creation who fell into madness, creating plagues and disease gods that brought suffering across worlds. Seokga and Hwanin deposed him, sealing him in Yeomra’s realm. The fact that the Eoduksini escaped from the same realm raises questions. Could their father be involved? What do you think? My suspicions only grow when we learn that it was also their farther who created Eoduksini’s in the first place and that they are able to kill a god…

Hwanin offers Seokga a bargain: kill the Scarlet Fox and the Eoduksini and in return, he will be reinstated to his former position. Of course he agrees but he has only sixteen days to complete the task.

OF COURSE Hani was eavesdropping on their entire conversation. She really lives up to her foxy nature – I love it.

Hani not being able to live without those ‘delicious American romance books’ is SO relatable. Same girl, same.

We have another murder, this time a haetae. I’m curious how the Eoduksini is choosing it’s victims? What it’s purpose?

Seokga tells Hani to gather a list of all the registered gumiho living in New Sinsi, specifically those near the location of the attack, as well as pulling more CCTV. This is the same CCTV that will show Hani walking over to the street where the murders took place. I wonder what she will do…

Seokga saying he wishes she were the Scarlet Fox so he could kill her… *nervous laughter enters the chat*There’s a witness to this murder?! And they’re a human!! This makes the stakes SO much higher; they need to find this witness before the Eoduksini does.

Hani discovers the location of the witness’s apartment on campus and, together with Seokga, sets out to find her. However, upon arriving, they encounter her roommate instead. The roommate reveals that the witness fled, claiming she was in danger, and is likely hiding in an abandoned village on Geoje Island.

Seokga sleeping on her couch while she rummaged through the CCTV tapes she had secretly brought home already had me incredibly nervous. Then he wakes up and knocks on her door, prompting her to shout that she’s naked to keep him from entering. She hurriedly shoves the tapes under her bed, but not well enough. As soon as the door opens, he spots them and demands to know why she has them. Uh oh…
Thankfully, our girl is a quick thinker and an excellent liar. She tells him she brought the tapes home to continue working on them since she didn’t have time at the precinct. She adds that she was afraid he wouldn’t let her accompany him to Geoje Island if she hadn’t finished reviewing them. Fortunately, he believes her story. Phewww!

The Eoduksini has struck again, but this time taking more than just one victim as well as eating their heart. (GROSS).

I’m glad they finally suspect Dok-hyun, he has been acting veryyyy strange with all his questions, asking what the witness has said, his inside knowledge of the Eoduksini and just general odd behaviour. What do you think? πŸ‘€

What do you guys think about Somi saying she’s been feeling odd? Do you think it could just be due to her eating the liver and her fox beed getting stronger? Or could it be something more sinister?

Okay I just adore Hyun-tae!! Saying he will protect Somi with his life? He’s instantly won a special place in my heart. πŸ₯Ί‘He resembles a grumpy old man chasing children from his lawn.’ Honestly? Very accurate representation.

Was anyone else screaming at Hani through the pages to be less obvious when choosing the daggers? I’m so relieved she managed to play it off after Seokga got suspicious, but seriously, you need to be more careful, girly!

Today’s chapters end with a smile on my face and a chuckle on my lips as Hani waltzes out with a shiny new pair of daggers that she cleverly convinced Seokga to buy for her (as she should).

Do you think they will make it to the witness before the Eoduksini?

Are you loving how much our two main characters hate each-other? (Hate-to-love is one of the best tropes – I said what I said).

Do you think Dok-Hyun could be the Eoduksini, or somehow be connected to it?

See you tomorrow for another day of reading!

Love,
Jodie

I also suspected Dok-Hyun almost immediately when he started asking questions. But I didn’t suspect Seokga’s father until I read this post πŸ€” hmm interesting…
On another note, I thought it was soo funny when Seokga called Hani “An Noying” πŸ˜‚.
I suspect that Somi is either craving more liver/soul or that she is one of the next victims of the Eudoksini. Can’t wait to read more!

Yessss I did too, he was acting very sketchy!! I thought that was funny too! πŸ˜‚

I think they will make it to the witness, but will the witness react how they hope?
They really do hate each other, but it seems Seokga hates almost everything that isn’t coffee LOL. Hani I think is maybe just serving up a little bit of his medicine back to Seokga ^^
I think Dok-Hyun is innocent, mainly because he has given so much dedication to this field. Do his actions raise a bit of suspicion? A little but I think he will be wrongly accused. I think he is simply trying to understand the lurking threat more.

    • Jodie

That is my worry! Yessss! I love how she doesn’t shy away from his grumpyness! πŸ‘€ Oooo that’s an interesting take, I like it!

It’s so much fun to read this! I was weary of it being too childish but it’s so fun that I forget about the attitudes they have sometimes and just go with it.
I am afraid the new murders will distract them from the witness and they won’t reach her on time. But I hope I’m wrong.
Yes, Dok-Hyum is very sus, but I feel it was so blatant that he won’t be the Eoduksini though he might have some connections to it. I didn’t think about the father being being connected but now that you mentioned, yes! It makes sense the dad trying to kill his sons who improsned him to get access to the world again.

I loooove the tension between Seokga and Hani. I completely agree with you that hate-to-love is one of the best tropes because it just makes the tensions so delicious. Hani is totally my favourite character in this book, and I love reading how she and Seokga annoy each other. This book just has the best parts of the k-dramas i love plus the mythology. perfect combination.

I think that Dok-Hyun is involved but the real Eudoskini is someone else (or it will be too easy!). But I am living for the hate-to-love between the 2 MC: I think Seokga actually wanted to gift Hanno the daggers… he just could not admin it. yet.

Like Seokga and Hani I was suspicious of Dok-Hyun for asking too many questions. I noticed that now the Chief and Somi are the only two other people who know the witness’ location πŸ‘€
I like Somi, she seems sweet and cute. I don’t really like that Hani is teaching her about eating livers and souls, why show this if it’s not going to come into play? I don’t like where this is going…
Loved Hwanin’s cameo, I’d definitely like to see more of him!
I find myself rooting for Hani and not wanting her to get caught even though she’s obviously morally grey – kills, lies, steals etc.

I suspected Dok-Hyun when he was first interested in the witness. I hope they reach the witness first. But I also feel like that would be too easy lol. And these two together is great. When Hani flicked him on the nose, I almost died laughing. Hani’s mischievous ideas are just so great. I love her so much.

  • dnjreads

Do you think they will make it to the witness before the Eoduksini?
I think they will only because they know where she is and the Eoduksini doesn’t. I hope nothing bad happens on the way though like them being followed or something.

Are you loving how much our two main characters hate each-other?
I love the hate to love trope so this is giving me everything I want. He really can’t stand her and I love when the guy realizes the reason for it.

Do you think Dok-Hyun could be the Eoduksini, or somehow be connected to it?
I think he could be the host or he could just be helping it somehow. Maybe his dad was the old host and then he died and transferred it to the son.

Dok-Hyun is definitely sus, but now I’m starting to be wary of Somi as well, especially since the Eoduksini killings started after she ate that liver. My current theory is that she’s either the one possesed by the Eoduksini, either in danger of becoming one of its victims.
I agree, Hani and Seokga need to just kiss already! The scenes at the university took me out, they’re so chaotic together I love it. Hani had so many close calls, it’s hilarious watching her try and outsmart Seokga at every turn. She’s literally sly as a fox.
Something tells me they’ll reach Ji-ah at the same time as the Eoduksini, just for added drama. But first I hope we get an extended road trip scene with these two!

  • sam.manucy

I have a feeling that as the stakes increase, the Eoduksini will inevitably make a mistake. I hope they find the witness in time!! And here’s to hoping the trip will be long enough to prompt a β€œone bed” trope – I can’t resist them!! Enemies to lovers is one of my favorite tropes, and these two are ticking all the boxes, not to mention the witty banter is top notch. I just can’t help but smile and chuckle along as I read. I’m on the fence about Dok-Hyun, either he is just very invested in his job or something sinister is happening behind the scenes.

  • Adriana Casaburi

I don’t know if they make it, we are only half in the story!
I like expecialy that Seokga starts to like her.
I believe Dok-Hyun knows who it is and he is working with it.

  • Marilag Angway

I felt like by the second victim, I started seeing Dok-hyun as highly suspicious, so I’m glad both Hani and Seogka picked up on it. I feel like if they’re wrong though, they might not get to the witness on time. I kinda low-key love this hate to love situation Hani and Seogka have! I’m surprised the two of them haven’t done a lot of bonding over their overall love of mischief and trickery, but hopefully there’s more to be had. I do worry over Somi, though. I feel like she’s either in danger of the eudoksini or is having some kind of gumiho awakening that might turn her into some kind of villain.

Yes me too! The hate to love vibes have added so much tension already! πŸ’œ

1 – Hani & Seokga will make it to Choi Ji-ah in time. I think the eoduksini was too busy feasting & didn’t realise there was a witness. A few other people know of the witness and a few know of her general location, but do they know about the bridge? I don’t think Choi Ji-ah will be of much help. As a human unaware of the non-human world, she will question what she saw as the victim was in animal form. Plus, the eoduksini may have been masked in its darkness while it was feeding on the haetae.
2 – I adore the petty battles going on between the lead characters. At this point, they are starting to build some camaraderie as work colleagues. Here’s to hoping the road trip brings them closer; unless Hani sleeps the entire way.
3 – Dok-Hyun has certainly been acting pretty suspicious with his questions and work research. It feels too obvious for him to be possessed. Perhaps his father didn’t die & is possessed by the eoduksini instead. Dok-Hyun may be trying to figure out how to cure him. However, our girl, Somi is acting a bit strange, too. Even Hani felt something behind Somi’s eyes. I have a feeling Somi is going to be a victim. The night Hani killed her attackers, something could have happened to Somi on her way home as well.

  • Bex

I don’t think they’ll make it to the Eoduksini first because it can attack from a distance and they’ve given away the witness’s location. Dok-Hyun is coming off pretty suspicious but maybe it’s just his curiosity and bad timing. And I don’t think Somi could be the Eoduksini but she might have a hunger for more power that she can’t control… Hani and Seokga might be returning to town with news of more people with missing liver.
I’m enjoying the interactions between Hani and Seokga, I can see they’re starting to grow on each other.

  • Rachel

I think they will make it to the witness but maybe the Eoduksini will show up at the same time?
Absolutely loving the hate to love😍 It’s really fun and making me smile a lot. I think Dok-Hyun is definitely suspicious but i’m not sure about him being the EoduksiniπŸ€” I’m more worried about Somi feeling weird. I think there’s definitely going to be more to that – could it be her?? Excited to read on!

I think that they will make it to the witness before the Eoduksini, I mean they have to right?!?! However I think if the Eoduksini does get to the witness before them, he will try and lure them into a trap and then Hani may have to show that she is the Scarlet Fox after all…

I love the banter between these two characters, the chemistry is literally blasting from the pages. I was hoping when Seogka was at Hani’s flat that something would happen between them.

Dok-Hyun reeks of suspicion, he is involved in some way. Working with the police is the best position that he can be in, as he is aware of the investigation and what is going on. Similar to Hani.
