The ‘ber’ months are finally here, bringing with them crisp mornings, golden leaves, and an irresistible urge to curl up with a good book! Even if your school days are long gone, you can’t deny there’s something alluring about the world of academia during this time of year. Perhaps it’s the promise of getting lost in ancient libraries, candlelit study sessions, and discovering long-lost secrets between the pages. Dark academia stories just seem to belong to this somber but cosy season. 🍂🕯️🖤

Books that combine the gothic, shadowy world of dark academia with the endless possibilities of fantasy create an incredibly atmospheric setting. Grand universities and secret societies become the backdrop for ancient rituals and supernatural beings. Here, magic is rarely effortless or freely given, but instead something to be studied and uncovered, usually at a dangerous cost. While the dark academia elements explore the sinister sides of this ambition alongside obsession and human nature, the fantasy side of things takes those themes even further, introducing higher stakes and adventure.

The pursuit of lost of forbidden knowledge is commonly woven into fantastical dark academia stories. Imagine long nights spent poring over dusty tomes in your new magical school you’ve been itching to explore! Characters often dig up cryptic clues that lead them to old magical practices that modern institutions have since banned or tried to hide, and it’s their role to learn how to master it either for the greater good, or for personal gain.
Often exploring the question of how far someone is willing to go in pursuit of this lost or forgotten knowledge, the inclusion of morally grey characters is another defining trait of dark academia fantasy. In these stories ambitious students may justify manipulation and cruelty in the search for perfection or truth, and charismatic professors often hold an almost holy authority over their students, turning their validation into something that is highly sought after.
Off the back of the above, there are sometimes no clear heroes or villains, but rather a mix of ambiguous characters who would sacrifice their wellbeing and maybe even their morality. In fantastical dark academias, power and magic is not something that comes easily, but is instead something that must be painstakingly studied, sometimes even requiring ancient languages and complex formulas. But that’s not the hardest part, as it’s common for such magic to come with a price, whether that be physical exhaustion, mental strain, or moral sacrifice. The more powerful the magic, the greater the consequences may be.
Intense friendships and relationships are another recurring theme, due to the isolating nature of educational settings. Being removed from the outside world and then placed amongst a small group of ambitious people can encourage incredibly close, all-consuming bonds. But it’s only natural that intellectual jealousy, competition, and secrets fester from these claustrophobic communities, potentially turning relationships sour.
When prestigious magical academies or universities operate as isolated worlds, privilege and power tend to be carefully protected, with ancient traditions and institutional reputation being valued above the wellbeing of those within them. Protagonists are often outsiders who find themselves navigating systems designed to exclude them, whether because of their class, gender, race, or place within society. In these stories they fight to prove themselves, challenging the institution itself and highlighting the theme of belonging.

Still searching for answers to this herself, Alex arrives in New Haven, and is tasked by her mysterious benefactors with monitoring the activities of Yale’s secret societies.
Gilded and glittering Camford, England’s secret magical academy, is no place for Clover, a commoner with neither connections nor magical blood. But when Clover catches the eye of golden boy Alden Lennox-Fontaine and his friends, doors that were previously closed to her are flung wide open, and she soon finds herself enmeshed in the seductive world of the country’s magical aristocrats.
