Welcome back to day 2 of our readalong for our May Romantasy featured book: A Curse of Blood and Wolves by Melissa McTernan!

Today we’re reading from chapter 10 to the end of chapter 18. Let’s go!

I’m intrigued to know what happened in Rafe’s past with Scarlet. Whatever it was seems to have made him very nervous about things with Ruby!
Back in the present, our mismatched family dynamic fall into a little routine of sorts. Rafe takes Ruby to work, he watches over her and Lena. It’s quite wholesome!
Ruby seems tough for all intents and purposes, but we see her slowly opening up to Rafe. She wants him to stay. To be fair, he’s quite the charmer! He even makes her breakfast. He says he has to since it’s what he’d do if they were really dating and they need to keep up the rouse… but I have a feeling he’d be doing it even without the fake dating!
He’s off to see his brother, Theo. Theo like Rafe, left the pack a while ago.
We get another flashback of Rafe’s time with Scarlet from when he was in the pack. His family make him feel silly for falling for a human. Honestly, they kind of suck. No wonder he left!
Whatever happened to her, I get the feeling Rafe is worried Ruby will share the same fate…
He gives Theo all of the updates he can, about the attack, unfamiliar wolves and Lena’s visions, but it doesn’t really help at all. We’re still left with no idea what’s happening!
When he returns, he can smell the wolves again. Ruby and Lena are fine though, and Ruby surprisingly followed his request to stay inside!
The tension between them is… ooft! It all feels awkward, weighted and heavy.
Despite the awkwardness, Rafe still continues to walk her to and from work, still exhibits very jealous reactions too. 😂 These two are so pent up on each other! Just get together already!!!
Lena’s actually been sorta ok for a while, until they find her curled up on the floor repeating ‘they’re coming’ again. WHO LENA???
Rafe decides it’s time to tell Ruby of his theory. He tells her he thinks Lena is a seer, and explains what that’d mean. Ruby more than anything is eager to know why he cares so much. Oh girly, c’mon. He’s head over heels for you! Don’t be obtuse!
They don’t tell Lena of Rafe’s theories. I don’t know how I feel about that. She’s the one who’s potentially a seer, shouldn’t she know?
They’re off to try find out more intel and this time Theo is coming to babysit Lena and he brings Phoebe along. I’m intrigued to know what’s happening here! Rafe is convinced Theo loves Phoebe, but nothing’s happening between them and Theo still sees other people. It’s all complicated!
She’s a dryad, a forest nymph, and apparently Theo and Rafe’s father didn’t want them hanging around half-breeds. Wow, so charming… 🙄
Rafe seems a lil bit jealous at Ruby’s interest in Theo. 👀 Ruby comforts him by telling him she likes his murderous face and giving him a little peck!
I’m super intrigued by this section and the introduction of a wolf brother!

I feel like tomorrow’s section is gonna give us some answers and I’m ready for it!

What do you think happened to Scarlet?
I think Rafe probably hurt her when he was in wolf form or his family may have (they seem like jerks)! Either way, it seems like she died young and was hurt by Rafe or his connection to the pack.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
I’m mixed! I think it could stress her out, and the visions are taking a lot from her. I think she would also have to see Rafe shift to believe it and he is self conscious about it. I would wait until they have more info to tell her (like maybe they look into her aunt 👀) or until she is more stable in between visions.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
I think Ruby has an aunt and now a sister with powers, and we don’t know if her parents had them too due to their passing. With that in mind, she could be some kind of witch (I feel like that’s seer adjacent). I know this is also a fated mates story, so it would seem weird to give Rafe a mate with a much shorter lifespan, so maybe she has some supernatural in her. OR maybe she is part werewolf and the accident her parents died in was orchestrated and now they’re coming for Lena and Ruby to kill off the half breed line (since Rafes dad was so anti half breed). I’m so excited to see what’s next!
What do you think happened to Scarlet? – I think she died as a connection to Rafe – perhaps not himself but his family? Or he lost control somehow.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark? – no I think she has a right to know. She may know something that she hasn’t told ruby yet either.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human? – either she can sense other beings and can tell she’s not fully human or it’s unlikely given Lenas power that Ruby would just be normal. No theories to what she is though but I’m still convinced there is a fate / soulmate trope going on between ruby and Rafe.
What do you think happened to Scarlet?
I’m wondering if maybe when she found out he was a werewolf she didn’t want to be with him and left him. Another option could be that made me his dad didn’t like it and did something to hurt her.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
I think they should start telling Lena more things and maybe she’ll be able to work out how to use her powers for good.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
I wonder if Ruby is a seer too, or maybe she has some little bit of wolf in her but is not able to shift. I only think this because of the possible fated mates thing.
What do you think happened to Scarlet?
I think something terrible happened to Scarlet, she probably is dead. I dont think Rafe killed her but she was probably killed or hurt as a result of something wolfy.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
I have a feeling it would be better to tell Lena the truth about her being a seer and about Rafe being a wolf. She uttered more than her normal “they’re coming” when Rafe asked her what she saw. I want to believe everything is connected and it would help them in the long run to just keep her in the loop.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
Maybe Phoebe can tell that Ruby is not totally human?!? Ruby did say she possibly dreamed of her parent’s death the night before it happened. With a history of visions in her family, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ruby got the seer gene as well.
Overall I’m really enjoying this read so far and cant wait to find out what happens next!

2) I think so, for now…she doesn’t seem very interested in figuring things out for herself even.
3) I think Ruby might’ve been onto something when she wondered if she too was a seer.
Also okay they are so cute. I love Phoebe. I feel like Rafe may be a bit of an unreliable narrator with how cynical he is about things, especially after seeing how Phoebe treats them like they’re grumpy puppies instead of dangerous monsters. I’m sure they ARE dangerous and have done some monstrous things, but that’s not at all the same. Setting my dislike of werewolves aside for these violent cinnamon rolls.
What do you think happened to Scarlet?
I think Rafe’s father or pack may have done something to her, or he snapped when she couldn’t accept him which makes him believe he is a monster.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
No, I think she should tell her sister what is going on.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
Ruby is obviously something more than human, whether that be a witch or part werewolf i am not sure. But definitely some sort of “half breed.”
I really hope in the next section we get more to the story, it is becoming slightly repetitive with how often Rafe talks about how he is a monster, and Ruby talks about how hot he is.

I think she was killed by a wolf in the end, maybe even his father? I believe we already read that she thought him a monster after finding out he is a wolf. Maybe he was exposed due to someone else, she ran away, was chased and killed
2. Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
No, since this might have to do with her and her ability, she should be in the know
3. What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
If her sister and aunt are/were seers, they must have some magic within them making Ruby not fully human.
Also, I wonder if Ruby and Lena are blood sisters, since they call each other that but every time Ruby talks about her parents, she says “my” and not “our”, “poor Ruby whose parents died” not “poor Ruby and Lena”… Maybe that is also why Lena has seer powers and Ruby doesn’t, maybe they are half-sisters or something and she has another type of blood within her
I dont think it’s nice that they are keeping Lena in the dark, i hope they tell her soon. I think the dad either made Rafe kill Scarlet or he killed her himself when he found out Rafe was in love with a human.
I dont think Ruby is human & I cant wait to keep reading more.

I think an accident happened and she was killed. Either by the pack, Rafe, or his dad.
Do you think it’s the right decision to keep Lena in the dark?
I don’t think so. Oftentimes, when the main characters are protecting someone by not telling them stuff they are actually putting them in more danger.
What do you think Phoebe meant when she asked Ruby if she’s sure she’s human?
Having a seer as a sister and having wolves after you makes me think that there is more to her and Pheobe than humanity.
