FairyLoot, the leading subscription box for fantasy books, is on the hunt for a talented, creative, and experienced Designer to join our brilliant Book Production Team. This role is a perfect match for individuals who are passionate about fiction, particularly fantasy, romantasy, and contemporary genres. Your Role:

As part of our dynamic team, you will be working on a diverse range of projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating captivating and marketable illustrations for dust jackets, hardcovers, endpapers and book edges.
  • Designing illustrations for print, with a close attention to detail in foil, spot UV, and embossing.
  • Integrating typography into designs to enhance the overall aesthetic
  • Ensuring all files are print ready
  • Collaborating with the team to produce high-quality designs that resonate with our audience

What we’re looking for:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator).
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating your expertise in the industry and ability to generate creative solutions
  • Previous experience in Publishing, specifically in creating impactful book covers
  • The capability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines
  • Up-to-date knowledge of trends in the special edition market
  • Independence in handling design briefs, as well as the ability to thrive in a team setting
  • An organised and efficient approach to work

Your key responsibilities:

  • Brainstorming creative ideas for special edition books, interpreting feedback and delivering innovative designs
  • Preparing files for print, this includes checking and setting the correct file formats, colour modes, paper finishes, foil, and ensuring that all elements are print-ready (resolution, bleed, crop marks, etc.)
  • Overseeing the creative journey from initial concept to final artwork, ensuring budget compliance and meeting deadlines. 
  • Engaging actively with various stakeholders, aligning design efforts with our publishing strategy and market approaches.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Proficiency in both print and digital design requirements.
  • Exceptional typographic abilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant illustrators.
  • Understanding of genre-specific commercial design trends.
  • Keen interest in current design and media trends.
  • Schedule management skills in a publishing context.
  • Strong problem-solving acumen.
  • A proactive and driven work ethic.
  • Teamwork capabilities.
  • Ability to forge effective working relationships.
  • Outstanding communication skills.
  • Competence in managing tight deadlines.
  • Excellent organisational and multitasking skills.
  • Prior experience in a design studio or the publishing industry.

Additional information:

  • Location: Work from Home, WORLDWIDE
  • Hours: 9-5pm Full time employment contract (UK based eligible only) OR freelancer contract (rest of world)
  • Starting salary: Competitive
