β!SPOILERS!β
We jump back into the story with Ying attempting to translate the recipe herself!
She decides to head to the temple and persuades the truth master, Master Chen, to make the concoction. He advises her against it but Ying insists.Β
Once the elixir is made, Ying drinks it but is filled with pain and collapses! Master Chen then tosses her out of the temple and Ying ends up fainting!Β
Ying awakens and finds Mei Po has saved her. Mei Po has a story to tell Ying and her role in the original war.Β
Mei Po had fallen in love with someone from the real world. They had finally gone to the Crimson Emperor to ask if they would be allowed to travel across the barrier but the Crimson Emperor was enraged, he was power hungry and didnβt like the idea of someone becoming more powerful than him.Β
To teach mirror Mei Po a lesson and to anyone else planning to cross between the worlds, he kills her lover in front of her!! Filled with rage, Mei Po decided she would take her revenge. The Crimson Emperor only loved the real Mei Po and so mirror Mei Po decides that she will do the same thing that he did to her.
Mei Po gathers an army and although they lost, she was able to kill the real Mei Po. However the consequence for that is that The Crimson Emperor destroys their mirror sun, forcing them to be reliant on the real world! They have been filled with resentment ever since and have been planning their escapeβ¦
Mei Po explains to Ying that she needs to unite the three treasures to close the barrier for good.Β
Before they can continue talking, Mei Po flees. The real prince has found Ying as he had been worried after she went missing. He apologises as does Ying. Wow I never thought weβd see him apologise!Β
They cannot continue their conversation, an arrow is shot at them! Ying and the prince are almost injured as the Emperor has told his guards that no one is to enter!Β
The prince is so angry as the Emperor doesnβt believe in the prophecy…Yingβs parents have appeared and Ying is so happy at being reunited with them! I’m happy for her too!
The prince and Ying are taken to see the Emperor. He is behaving oddly and drinking from the chalice that Ying had seen in Master Chenβs store room.Β
They try to warn everyone of the danger but Master Chen keeps countering everything they say and it seems the Emperor listens to everything he says!Β
Ying tries to prove the mirror world barrier is broken but the Emperor still refuses to listen. He says heβll think about it and makes Ying and the prince leave.Β
Shortly after Ying and the prince leave, the prince apologises for his father and says he hadnβt been the same since his brother’s death. The prince is wracked with guilt as the older brother was killed by his guards, believing they were helping him.
A guard suddenly appears and tells them that Princess Ying Yue is to be arrested for treason?? Omg what is happening!
Ying is confined to a tower and is there for days. The prince was able to sneak out to meet her. The next visitor Ying has is the empress! Iβm so intrigued, we havenβt seen much of her!
The empress explains to Ying that Master Chen is ruthless and he wants to get rid of anyone in his pursuit of power.Β The empress wants to help her son and Ying as she knows that Ying is good for him.Β
She leaves with an ominous message, like the prince, she warns Ying to not look out of her windowβ¦ oh no I wonder whatβs going to happenβ¦
Having some alone time to think Ying realises that she loves the prince. They had both behaved the way that they had, and said those things to protect themselves.
Ying of course does look outside and sees that there are gallows and six people being led towards them by guards. When they turn she sees that itβs her family!? Omg nooo!
Master Chen comes in with guards, unless Ying tells him everything he wants to know, a family member of hers will die one by oneβ¦
Two of her brothers are sacrificed and Ying is desperate to tell him anything. Sheβs about to tell him about The Book of Alchemy but suddenly feels something strange in the air! She sees the fish moving in the lake and is able to control them, they burst out of the water and turn into a horde of dragons!Β
Ying commands the dragons to save her family but itβs too late for her two brothers. After ensuring that they will be safe for now she escapes with the prince.
They head to the Moon Palace, a residence gifted to the prince by his mother. When they arrive at the palace the empress is already there. She knew they would head there and has already taken protective measures to rid the palace of all reflective surfaces.
Apparently the Emperor has been experimenting with explosive alchemy with Master Chen! The empress says that is going back to the palace to try and deal with the Emperor but asks the prince to keep himself safe!
Wow I am so excited that we saw more dragons, I love dragons so much! This book is really heating up and I canβt believe that itβs almost over!Β
What are everyoneβs theories for tomorrowβs final day of reading?
Love,
Isla

The betrayals keep on coming! It’s so hard to see who to trust, and hopefully we can continue to trust the prince in the last part of the book. Although with the ending looming I feel there is going to be a sacrifice of some kind, whether its Ying or Prince, I know its bound to happen
It really just was so many betrayals! I’m hoping for that too, I would hate to see the real prince betray her as well… and that’s an interesting theory but I hope not!
MEI PO IS NOT A VILLAIN YASSSS or so we think for now. This book is messing with my mind so much.
What are everyoneβs theories for tomorrowβs final day of reading?
I’m really undecided about the empress. She keeps promising things but can she really deliver? Otherwise Ying has managed to turn fish into dragons several times now so I think she’s in the right path to figuring out whatever alchemy is inside her.
I do agree Ying is starting to figure out the alchemy inside her, I hope she’ll be able to work out all the puzzles before the final battle!
Awww the scene where he brothers die, palace life and politics is so cold. They went straight to the gallows idea.
I know a theme running through this is revenge is bad, but boy do i want her to get her revenge on the Emperor and his advisor. I’m not a better person.
It was really sad, I was so hoping that none of them would die…
Mei Po as a character is really interesting, and I actually would have been very interested in knowing more about her past! I always did find the real prince I intriguing, and I like that there’s more of him being involved in this second half of the book. I am a bit afraid of how Ying will be able to close the barrier. I don’t think Zhang will be sacrificed, but I do feel Ying might lose something in the exchange. Maybe her magic or ability to actually travel. Or maybe it circles back to Mei Po and she dies in Ying’s place.
I am not a big fan of the magic just happening with no explanation. Like oh I just realised I can control the fish again? Seems strange and I wish we had more explanation. I also think her two brothers dying was unexpectedly brutal – like that’s terrible and was sort of brushed over?
I was really blown away by the empress’s agency! I’m glad that she’s joining forces with the prince and Ying. I hope they are able to defeat the mirror people or find a way to live in harmony with them!
I was very glad when she joined their side too, hopefully it makes a difference!
Is Master Chen poisoning the Emperor or is it the Empress? Obviously something is going on with the chalice. I canβt wait to finish the book and see how it ends!
The chalice is definitely suspicious…
The scene when her brother died was so heartbreaking π. I hope rest of her family will be safe now.
I really hope Ying will figures out how to close the barrier and there will be happy ending.
I think we can trust Empresses but the Emperor is probably dragged with the tea that he drinks and canβt think properly. I canβt wait to see what happens π€
ooo that’s definitely an interesting theory about the Emperor!…
