Hello bookworms!
Happy Thursday and welcome to day 4 of our readalong ofΒ The God and the Gumiho by Sophie Kim.Β Iβm so excited to be reading this one with you, I hope you’re all loving it as much as I am!
Wow, there was a lot of excitement, tension and of course, grumpiness, in yesterdayβs chapters!
Today weβre reading from chapter 25 to the end of chapter 37. Letβs do this!
When youβve finished todayβs section, catch up with me in the comments down below so we can discuss the beginning of the book. Happy reading!
Please be warned, the following section will include spoilers for The God and the Gumiho, from chapters 25 to 37. Please only read on if youβve finished this section!
-!SPOILERS!-
We kick off todayβs reading with Hani heading over for a sleepover at Seokgaβs, and Iβm internally screaming. And that screaming only intensifies when Seokfa refers to his room as βour roomβ.
Why did she bring the daggers?! I get it, but heβs definitely going to discover them and learn her true identity. Iβm even more nervous now. Anyone else have a bad feeling about this?
The next morning, Chief Shim reports that three more bodies have been found at NSU, and this time, theyβre the work of the Scarlet Fox. Thatβs strange since Hani didnβt do it… So who did? I suspect it might be Somiβ¦
After visiting the crime scene, Hani and Seokga head to the creature cafΓ©. There, Hani sneaks away with Somi and discovers that it was, in fact, Somi who killed those people.
We learn that Somi has a hypersensitivity to the power she gains from consuming menβs livers, trapping her in a difficult-to-break vicious cycle.
Hani then transforms into her fox form and secretly rushes off to destroy the cameras and dispose of the bodies to protect Somi.
βConsoling Seokga is a lot like comforting a morose child prone to throwing tantrumsβ. I just spate my tea out.
Seokga asking Hani βWhat are we?β I cannot deal. This man is a literal softie/teddy bear at heart. I love him.
He also says Hani feels like home π.
After Seokga falls asleep on top of her following more kissing, shadows suddenly start to fill the room. Hani wakes him, realising they are not alone.
It turns out it’s not the Eoduksini, but a equally scary unruly called the βSlit-Mouthed Woman.β She delivers a chilling message from the Eoduksini before Seokga dispatches her: the Eoduksini plans to toy with them before consuming them, and their story will end in tragedy. Oh no.
To draw out the Eoduksini, the pair heads to a club, hoping to provoke it by appearing indifferent. Unfortunately, their plan succeeds, and Hani is thrown into a nightmare.
My earlier suspicions that the Eoduksini might not be Dok-Hyun seem to have some merit now. As Hani pointed out, why is it still concealing its identity from her?
Things get even more tense when Hani realises this is all too real and sheβs witnessing whatβs happening to Somi. The Eoduksini reveals to Somi that Hani is the Scarlet Fox and implies that Somi is being framed as the Scarlet Fox by Hani. He then invites Somi to join him, and she foolishly agrees.Seokga awakens in a dark room littered with limp bodies, haunted by memories of the day he became The Fallen. He finds an unconscious Hani and gently takes her in his arms.
Chief Shim is furious with Seokga and Hani for their actions, which resulted in civilian casualties. He demands that Seokga leave the precinct. Seokga pleads for a chance to make things right, and Chief Shim then shows him CCTV footage of the ‘Scarlet Fox’ and the Eoduksini together.
Hani finally awakens in Seokgaβs arms, still trembling with fear. He tells her that Somi is the Scarlet Fox and has murdered twenty people in the past day alone. Hani calls her phone, and Hyun-tae answers. She asks him to meet her.
When Hyun-tae arrives, the three of them sit at the dining table. Hani insists they canβt be sure Somi is the Scarlet Fox and pleads with them not to kill her. Seokga reluctantly agrees, at least for her sake. They then devise a plan to track down Somi and the Eoduksini using Hyun-taeβs resources.
Okay but coffee being their greatest defence against the Eoduksini? I just know Seokga is ecstatic about that.Them saying they hate each other whilst kissing… Your honour, I love them!
Anyone else feel super awkward during their conversation about what heβd do if she were the Scarlet Fox? Yikes, things are getting complicated.
After todayβs chapters, things are getting really tense and difficult for Hani. Iβm both nervous and intrigued to see what tomorrowβs reading will bring!
How do you think Seokga will react if Hani’s true identity is revealed?
Do you think Hani will be able to save Somi and make her believe her?
Are you a little suspicious of the Eudoksini’s true identity like I am?
Who’s ready for tomorrow’s last section?!Β See you there, fairies!
Love,
Jodie

Wow these chapters were intense, and it got a bit more than darker than I expected due to the humor since now. But I like it!
Seokga is going to discover Hami and there’s going to be a lot of drama about it. Why did she take the daggers? Maybe they’ll be important to save him and he will forgive her, but I am so weary of them!
It’s not really looking good for Somi but I hope Hami can save her somehow.
I wasn’t even sure it was Dok-Hyun in the last chapters, and I have a feeling it’s not him. Otherwise he didn’t need to remain hidden.
Ready to finish, I have a feeling I’ll read the chapters I have left tonight!
Are you a little suspicious of the Eudoksiniβs true identity like I am? Yeah, not sure of the true identity and I’m sure
Whoβs ready for tomorrowβs last section?! See you there, fairies!
At the moment Seokga doesn’t seem to suspect Hani at all. I don’t think he’ll react well, he’ll see it as a betrayal. I can’t understand what Hani is thinking with the daggers!
I k ew something bad was going to happen with Somi, can’t believe she joined the demon π
I have no idea who the demon is at this point, there’s a few hints that it isn’t the doctor after all… I just hope it’s not the Chief as that would heart Seokga too much.
I’m glad that coffee is back in the picture, I was disappointed when Hani left the job at the coffee shop as it was a nice setting βοΈ It was quite clever to get caffeinated to avoid sleep/nightmares.
I suspected that Somi was acting weird because she was craving more liver/soul. And I was right! π€ Maybe I was wrong and Dok-Hyun is not the Eudoksini after all, but then I have no clue who it can be.
I hope Seokga can be merciful to Hani if he finds out that she is the Scarlet Fox π
I like that the tone of the book changed to something more serious and higher stakes. Wonder how it will end π«£
What a mess this is turning into! I am quite curious to if Hani comes clean or if Seokga somehow finds out first. Iβm hoping sheβs able to save Somi. The poor thing is just so confused and frightened so itβs no wonder the Eudoksini went after her tricking her into joining. I am suspicious of his true identity. I definitely think thereβs something extra going on in the background behind the attacks. But canβt quite figure out what.
Me too, I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see what will happen! π«£ I agree!
How do you think Seokga will react if Haniβs true identity is revealed?
I feel like he is going to be pissed, especially since he likes her. I feel like it’s going to be revealed right at the end and we will be left waiting for his response until the next book.
Do you think Hani will be able to save Somi and make her believe her?
I hope she can, I did not see Somi becoming a killer at all. That was a complete surprise.
Are you a little suspicious of the Eudoksiniβs true identity like I am?
I am suspicious and I’m also wondering what it’s underlying cause is for showing it’s face now is. It’s been around so long but what changed
I think Seokga will be in denial that Hani will be the Fox. He has grown pretty attached and I think the confession will cause him to be like “no that’s impossible, you can’t be!” He wants to see Somi be the Fox.
I think Hani will be unable to save Somi. I think this state makes her too easy to be claimed by the Eudoksini.
I called who the Eudoksini’s true form was and it was not surprising to me, but it is an interesting twist to the story!
These chapters were tense! I feel like im the one who had 15 cups of coffee! π I just want everyone to be safe and happy.
That is very relatable! π
Oh gawd, it’s gonna hurt SO BAD when Seogka eventually finds out, especially with how much he’s opened up from his grumpy grumpiness! I do think the tears thing is going to come back around and it will definitely be either Seogka or Hani crying over the other. I also think it’s going to be a matter of saving Hani or saving Somi, and Hani might actually surprise herself and everyone by outing herself as the Scarlet Fox and then ending the hunt. Which means she might die and it’ll be SO SAD. I’m also thinking the eudoksini might actually be the reaper who has a crush on Somi. Somi seemed really familiar when she was addressing the eudoksini, so probably not the doctor after all…
I love their budding romance, but the stakes keep getting higher!! Especially as Seokgaβs stance on the Scarlett Fox doubles down. I feel so badly for Hani regarding Somiβs βcondition.β Hani has felt a familial kinship with the murdered βbaby Gumiho,β and Iβm sure she feels crushed by essentially being responsible for Somiβs collapse into bloodlust. Somi joining rank with the Eoduksini must cut very deeply, especially considering Somi is Haniβs only true friend, aside from the budding yet complicated romance with Seokga. I have a rather bad feeling that there will be a bitter fight scene between two friends and I am no emotionally prepared. I really loved Hani using her fox form, I just thought the transformation and her speed was a great show of her well-fed fox bead. I hope Seokga would choose Hani once her true identity is revealed, but it still makes me nervous to think about!!
If Seokga finds out Hani is the scarlet fox without her being the one to tell him I think heβll feel very betrayed. Heβs already got that negative voice in his head. Iβm not ready to see things between Hani and Seokga go bad theyβre too cute together!
I hope Hani figures things out, so Somi and Seokga donβt get hurt. Maybe Seokga will have some understanding about the nature of a Gumiho because of his nature being a trickster God.
Iβm starting to think the Eudoksiniβs true identity could be Shim. Canβt wait to finish reading and find out!
I donβt think Seokga is going to react well at all to Hank being the scarlet fox. Hopefully he will give her a chance to explain though. I do think (and hope) Hani will be able to save Somi. I really like Somi, sheβs obviously just hurt at the moment and struggling. Yes Iβm definitely suspicious of the Eudoksiniβs identity! Iβm a bit worried Hyun-tae is hiding something , he seems a bit too nice π€ Excited but a bit scared to read what happens next
Two readalong days ending so steamy!!! I’m so glad to hear Hani & Seokga have finally caught on to what we’ve all known for quite some time!
Seokga will be seriously upset when he realises his inner voice was right with Hani deceiving him. *sad face* She should have come clean earlier. He has already suspected it. Yet, Hani needed to melt his cold heart a bit to have a chance. The confliction!
At this point, I don’t think Hani has a chance to save Somi’s life unless Gamangnara is opened again. She’s upset not only Seokga with her blatant killing but all Hwanin. Even if Hani convinces Seokga, she doesn’t stand a chance with Hwanin. Maybe once Hani does get Somi to believe she wasn’t betraying her, Hyun-Tae can save Somi’s life by taking her to Jeoseung.
I find it rather odd that the Eoduksini blurs itself from her view but when the haetae view the CCTV footage of Somi with the Eoduksini, they seem sure it’s Dok-Hyun. The Eoduksini seem to be able to change their appearance. My suspects are Mireuk, Lee Dae-Song, or (very slim chance) Hak Minji. My main suspect is Mireuk though. Who else would have that much power?
Loving this book. I hope Fairyloot does SE’s of the rest of the books in this series. Please & thank you!
